What you are looking at

This camera looks at Redoubt Volcano from a low vantage point in upper Cook Inlet, only about 12 m (40 feet) above the water and about 95 km (59 miles) northeast of the volcano. It points southwest across the inlet, so most of the frame is gray water and sky; on clear days Redoubt appears as a small snowy massif on the far horizon, with other peaks of the western shore beside it.

Redoubt is one of Cook Inlet's most active volcanoes, with major eruptions in 1989 to 1990 and in 2009. During those eruptions, ash plumes rose high above the volcano and drifted over oil platforms, towns and air routes in the inlet. Distant views like this help confirm what pilots and residents might see. For current status, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Redoubt page.

The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Haze and low cloud often hide the far shore, and in winter, sea ice can drift through the foreground. Sunsets behind the western peaks can be colorful. Tip: for a close view of the summit, switch to the RDJH or RDDF cameras on the volcano itself.
