What you are looking at
This JMA camera views Sakurajima from Arasaki in Tarumizu, on the Osumi Peninsula shore south-southeast of the volcano. It sits on a low rise near the shore, so the view runs across the water to the volcano's southern slopes and the summit crater area of Minamidake, where ash plumes often rise.
Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, erupting small to moderate ash explosions many times a year in active periods. It was an island until 1914, when the great Taisho eruption poured out lava that filled the strait and joined it to the Osumi Peninsula. Kagoshima city lies just across the bay to the west, and residents are used to sweeping up ash; wind direction decides which side of the bay gets it. Plumes stand out best on clear days, and evening light can show a glow over the crater.
JMA keeps Sakurajima on its five-level Volcanic Alert Level, where Level 3 closes the mountain around the craters and Levels 4 and 5 involve evacuating island communities. For the latest, check JMA's current alert level.
