What you are looking at

This AHT camera is on Amchitka Island in the western Aleutians and looks north-northeast across tundra and sea toward Semisopochnoi Island, about 64 km (40 miles) away. In the foreground you see the grass and low plants of the island, with two instrument towers and their guy wires framing the view; on clear days, the low outline of distant islands appears along the horizon.

Semisopochnoi is an uninhabited island volcano with a large summit caldera. Mount Cerberus, a three-peaked cone inside that caldera, has had repeated small explosive eruptions in recent years. Because there are no people living near it, distant cameras like this one, together with satellites and seismic stations, are how AVO watches for ash. For the current status, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Semisopochnoi page and alert level.

Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. At this distance, haze, rain and low cloud often hide Semisopochnoi completely; the best chance is on clear, cold days. Summer brings long daylight and green tundra; winter brings short days, snow and frequent storms. Tip: for a much closer look, switch to the CEPE or CETU cameras on Semisopochnoi itself.
