What you are looking at

The CEPE camera sits at about 340 m (1,110 feet) on Semisopochnoi Island in the western Aleutians, about 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the island's center, and looks southwest. The frame shows a dark, multi-peaked massif rising above green slopes, which includes Mount Cerberus, the three-peaked cone inside the island's caldera that has been the site of its recent eruptions.

Semisopochnoi is one of the largest volcanic islands in the western Aleutians, with a caldera about 8 km (5 miles) wide. Since 2018 it has had repeated periods of small explosions and ash emissions from Mount Cerberus's north cone. The island is uninhabited, so cameras, satellites and seismic stations are the main ways to watch it. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Semisopochnoi page lists the current alert level.

The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Clouds, fog and wind are constant companions in the western Aleutians; clear frames are most common on cold days. In summer the slopes turn green; in winter they are white. Tip: look for ash plumes or fresh dark deposits on snow near Cerberus during active periods.
