What you are looking at

This camera near Black Butte, in central Oregon, looks south-southwest across a pond and meadow to the Three Sisters, about 25 to 35 km (15 to 22 miles) away. On clear days the snowy summits of the Sisters and neighboring peaks line the horizon above a dark band of pine forest, with the still water in the foreground often reflecting them. It is part of the Cascades Volcano Observatory camera network.

The Three Sisters are a cluster of volcanoes in the central Oregon Cascades. Since the late 1990s, satellite measurements have shown a broad area of ground a few miles west of South Sister slowly rising, likely because magma is accumulating at depth. This uplift is monitored closely, though it does not mean an eruption is near. Check the CVO Three Sisters page for the current alert level.

Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. Summer brings green meadows and the least snow on the peaks; fall turns the grasses golden; winter covers everything in white. Calm mornings give the best reflections on the pond. Tip: wildfire smoke in late summer can hide the mountains completely even when the foreground is sunny.
