What you are looking at
GeoNet operates this camera at Te Kaha, on the eastern Bay of Plenty coast of New Zealand's North Island, looking west across the sea to Whakaari / White Island. GeoNet is the national monitoring service for volcanoes and earthquakes, run by Earth Sciences New Zealand with the Natural Hazards Commission. Seen from Te Kaha, the island is a low shape far out on the horizon.
Whakaari is New Zealand's most active cone volcano, and its crater often gives off a plume of steam and gas that drifts with the wind. On calm, clear days the plume can rise straight up, while in strong wind it may lie flat across the sea. Haze, sea spray and low cloud can hide the island completely. This second viewpoint, from the east, helps scientists judge the height and direction of a plume when the Whakatāne camera's view is unclear. Whakaari's eruption in December 2019 killed 22 people, and tourist landings have not resumed.
The Volcanic Alert Level scale used in New Zealand runs from 0 to 5: 1 and 2 for unrest, 3 to 5 for eruptions. For Whakaari's current level, check GeoNet. The camera sends a still image about every 10 minutes; late afternoon light from the west can make the island hard to see.
