What you are looking at

This GeoNet camera, on the coast at Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty, looks out to sea toward Whakaari / White Island, an active volcano about 48 kilometers offshore. GeoNet is New Zealand's geological hazard monitoring service, run by Earth Sciences New Zealand with the Natural Hazards Commission. Whakaari is the top of a large undersea volcano, and it often has a steam plume rising from its crater.

On clear days the island sits low on the horizon, sometimes with a white plume drifting off with the wind; on hazy or rainy days it may be invisible. Sunrise frames can show the island as a dark shape against a colored sky. On December 9, 2019, an eruption at Whakaari killed 22 people who were visiting the island, and landings by tour groups have not resumed since. The camera lets anyone watch it safely from the mainland.

New Zealand's Volcanic Alert Levels run from 0 to 5; 1 and 2 mean unrest, and 3 to 5 mean an eruption. Check GeoNet for Whakaari's current level and any aviation notices. The camera produces a new still image about every 10 minutes, so watch a few frames to see how the plume changes.
