Live cameras in Calgary, Canada

Calgary grew up where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet in southwestern Alberta, in the band of rolling land between the prairies and the Rocky Mountain foothills. The front ranges rise about 80 kilometres to the west, and on a clear day they make a sharp line on the horizon. At roughly 1,045 metres above sea level, it is a high, dry city of about 1.3 million people, according to the 2021 census.

Its own cameras, more than 200 of them, belong to the City of Calgary’s traffic network. They watch the big interchanges and arterial corridors where commuters actually feel the pinch: spots such as Glenmore Trail at Crowchild Trail, Crowchild at Shaganappi Trail, Glenmore at Macleod Trail, and several points where city streets meet Deerfoot Trail, including Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue NE. The pictures are snapshots that update at intervals, which is plenty for judging snow on the pavement or a backup on a ramp.

Weather is the real reason to keep an eye on Calgary. Warm, dry chinook winds can lift a winter afternoon by 20 °C or more in a few hours, melting fresh snow almost as you watch, and the band of cloud called the chinook arch often colors sunrise and sunset. Snow is possible in any month, though March tends to be the snowiest. In summer the city sits in what Albertans call Hailstorm Alley, and short, violent storms can roll through on hot afternoons. Calgary is also the sunniest of Canada’s larger cities, yet winter days are short: around the December solstice the sun rises after eight in the morning Mountain Time and sets well before five.

Early July is busy around Stampede Park just southeast of downtown during the ten-day Calgary Stampede. Farther out, the radius may pick up provincial highway cameras on Stoney Trail and the Trans-Canada Highway heading west toward Canmore and Banff National Park.
