Cranbrook is the largest city in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, with about 20,500 residents at the 2021 census. It lies in the broad Rocky Mountain Trench, with the Purcell Mountains to the west and the Rockies to the east, close to both the Alberta line and the US border. The Ktunaxa people have lived in this valley for thousands of years, and the community of ʔaq̓am sits just northeast of town. The railway made Cranbrook a regional center, and the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel keeps a collection of restored luxury passenger cars downtown.

The DriveBC cameras for Cranbrook sit on the highways that cross here. Highway 3, the Crowsnest route, links the city east to Fernie and the Crowsnest Pass and west toward Creston, while Highways 93 and 95 run north to Kimberley and Invermere and south toward the Montana and Idaho borders. Several pictures come from mountain weather sites out of town, handy for spotting snow or ice on the climbs. Images refresh as stills every few minutes.

A different clock

Unlike most of British Columbia, Cranbrook keeps time with Alberta rather than Vancouver. When the province moved to permanent Pacific time in 2026, the East Kootenay was left to choose, and its communities stayed aligned with Alberta, which is also keeping its summer clock all year from November 2026. In practice that means UTC minus six year-round, one hour ahead of the coast. With that later clock, December sunrise comes around half past nine and sunset close to six, while June evenings stay light until nearly ten.

Winters are cold and fairly dry, and summers warm and bright. Fort Steele Heritage Town, a restored gold-rush settlement, is about fifteen minutes northeast, and the ski hill at Kimberley is half an hour north.
