Toronto is Canada’s largest city, spread along a harbor on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. The city proper covers about 631 square kilometres and had about 2.8 million residents in the 2021 census, with more than six million across the Greater Toronto Area. Ravines, the Don River valley and a long waterfront break up a dense grid of neighborhoods that reaches from the lake north past Highway 401.

The city began installing these cameras in 1993 to watch the Gardiner Expressway, which roughly follows the lakeshore, and the Don Valley Parkway, which climbs the valley from downtown to the 401. • Toronto is largely spared the intense lake-effect squalls that hit cities on the southern and eastern Great Lakes shores, but a passing storm still shows up quickly on the cameras.
• December afternoons go dark before five o’clock Eastern Time, so midday gives the clearest pictures.
• Summer evenings stay bright late, and lake breezes keep the waterfront a little cooler.

Late August into early September is a lively stretch near the lake, when the Canadian National Exhibition fills Exhibition Place beside the Gardiner and the Toronto International Film Festival follows downtown. Weekday rush hours on the parkway are a classic sight in their own right.
