Dunedin is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, home to about 133,000 people at the head of the long, sheltered Otago Harbour on the island's southeast coast. Scottish settlers of the Free Church of Scotland founded it in 1848, and its name comes from the Gaelic for Edinburgh. Gold rushes in the 1860s made it briefly the richest city in the country, and that wealth left grand stone buildings, including the railway station of 1906 with its ornate gingerbread look. The University of Otago, the oldest in New Zealand, gives the city a lively student population, and Baldwin Street in the North East Valley is famous as one of the steepest residential streets in the world.
Dunedin's cameras are from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and show still images from the state highway network that refresh every few minutes. State Highway 1 crosses the city, arriving from the north over the hills as the Dunedin Northern Motorway and leaving to the southwest through Caversham and over Saddle Hill as the Southern Motorway. State Highway 88 runs along the western side of the harbor to the container port at Port Chalmers. Expect motorway views, hill roads and, in winter, frosty or snowy mornings on the higher stretches.
When to look
The city uses New Zealand time, with daylight saving from late September to early April. Being so far south, Dunedin has long summer evenings, with sunset after half past nine around the December solstice, and short winter days. The climate is mild and changeable, and cold southerly changes can bring snow to the surrounding hills a few times each winter. During the university year, the start of the first semester in late February brings a burst of traffic as students return.
Out on the Otago Peninsula, Taiaroa Head is home to the only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross in the world, and the bays along the peninsula road are home to penguins and seals.
