Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island, with about 419,000 residents. It spreads across the flat Canterbury Plains near the Pacific coast, with the volcanic Port Hills and Banks Peninsula rising to the south and the port town of Lyttelton tucked into a harbor on the far side of the hills. The Avon River, Ōtākaro in Māori, winds through the center past Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens, which is part of why the city is known as the Garden City. Founded by English settlers in 1850 and named after Christ Church college in Oxford, it was badly damaged by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The rebuilt center now mixes restored stone buildings with new public spaces along the river.
