What you are looking at
This NIKH camera is near Nikolski, a small village on Umnak Island, at about 200 m (650 feet). It looks west-southwest across the open sea of Samalga Pass toward the Islands of Four Mountains, about 75 km (47 miles) away. On clear days, the snowy cones of Cleveland and its neighboring volcanoes line up along the horizon, while the near shoreline and a bit of instrument equipment sit in the foreground.
The Islands of Four Mountains are a group of volcanic islands, of which Mount Cleveland is by far the most active. Because they are uninhabited, distant views like this one, from the nearest community, are part of how AVO watches for ash plumes that could affect air traffic and nearby villages. AVO lists Cleveland's current color code and alert level on its website.
The image here refreshes about every ten minutes. Over this distance, haze and sea fog often hide the islands; crisp, cold days give the best views. Low sun at sunrise and sunset can light the peaks pink. Tip: if the horizon is clear here, check the closer Cleveland cameras for detail of the summit.
