The Jelly Cam from the Monterey Bay Aquarium gives an up-close look at Pacific sea nettles in the aquarium's Open Sea area. These orange-gold jellies trail long tentacles and lacy mouth-arms as they pulse slowly through the water, and the camera is framed tightly enough to follow single animals as they drift.
The calm look is a little misleading: a sea nettle's tentacles are covered with stinging cells. When they touch tiny prey, the cells stun it and hold on, and the prey is passed to the mouth-arms and then to the mouth to be digested. You may see jellies of different sizes rising, sinking and turning in the current, their bells contracting in a steady rhythm. The scene changes slowly, which is why many people use this camera as a relaxing background view.
