This Monterey Bay Aquarium camera looks into the Kelp Forest, one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world at 28 feet deep. Seawater is pumped in directly from Monterey Bay at about 2,000 gallons per minute, and a surge machine keeps the water moving the way kelp needs. The kelp grows about four inches a day, so scuba divers trim and untangle it every week.
The camera gives a diver's view of sardines and anchovies flashing between the fronds, leopard sharks cruising near the bottom, wolf eels tucked into rocks and many kinds of rockfish. Do not be surprised to see a rockfish hanging still or even upside down; a gas-filled swim bladder lets it hover in place. The scheduled feeding is at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time, when divers often enter the exhibit.
The stream plays as live video on YouTube from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific time each day. A practical tip: watch the light change through the day, since sunlight filters down from the open top of the exhibit, and the swaying kelp makes this one of the most calming views on the aquarium's channel.
