What you are looking at

The Shark Cam from the Monterey Bay Aquarium looks into the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit, a rocky reef designed with sharks in mind. Its 90-foot-long hourglass shape gives large sharks plenty of room to glide and turn, and the animals here are the same kinds that live in the cold waters of Monterey Bay just outside the aquarium's walls.

Look for broadnose sevengill sharks, leopard sharks, spiny dogfish and the hard-to-spot Pacific angel shark, which often lies flat and camouflaged on the sand. Big skates and bat rays, relatives of the sharks, may flap past the window, while sturgeon cruise by, giant sea bass and rockfish rest near the reef, and flatfish hide on the sandy floor. Sharks tend to move steadily, so it is worth watching for a while to see who passes.

The stream plays as live video on YouTube from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific time. A practical tip: watch the sand at the bottom of the frame closely. Angel sharks and flatfish blend in so well that you may only notice them when they move or the light shifts.
