Aleutian Islands sunset live cam – Makushin (MREP camera)

What you are looking at
The MREP camera sits at about 785 m (2,580 feet) on Unalaska Island, about 15 km (9 miles) east-southeast of Makushin Volcano, and looks west-northwest toward the summit. On clear days, Makushin's broad, ice-covered summit plateau and snowy ridges fill the frame, with dark rock showing through the snow on the slopes below.
Makushin is a large, glacier-covered stratovolcano near the town of Unalaska and the port of Dutch Harbor, one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States. It has had small eruptions in historical times, and its geothermal areas have been studied as a possible source of power for the town. For current status and alert level, see the Alaska Volcano Observatory Makushin page.
A fresh frame appears here about every ten minutes. Clear, cold winter days show the snowy summit best; summer reveals more rock and green lower slopes. Clouds often cap the volcano. Tip: a steam plume is sometimes visible on cold, calm days, and is usually just normal fumarole activity.
