What you are looking at

This DOL camera sits at about 450 m (1,490 feet) on Dolgoi Island, about 30 km (19 miles) south of Pavlof Volcano, and looks north across the open water of Pavlof Bay. On clear days, a row of snowy peaks lines the horizon, with Pavlof and Pavlof Sister among them, while the sea fills the lower part of the frame.

Pavlof is one of the most active volcanoes in Alaska, with frequent eruptions that can produce lava fountains, ash plumes and lahars down its snowy flanks. The view from the south shows the volcano's ocean-facing side, the direction from which many of its plumes are visible to boats in the area. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Pavlof page lists the current alert level and updates.

The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Sea fog and low clouds often hide the peaks entirely; clear, cold days give the best chance. Morning sun lights the volcanoes from the east. Tip: during an eruption, compare this view with the closer PS1A camera, which shows both cones in detail from the east.
