What you are looking at

From the east side of Lake Chubetsu, a dam reservoir in Higashikawa, this JMA camera looks up the valley toward Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido and the youngest volcano of the Taisetsuzan (Daisetsuzan) group. The camera sits well below and west of the summit, so the view takes in the long western flank, where a horseshoe-shaped crater called Jigokudani opens toward you and steam rises from its many vents.

Taisetsuzan is a ring of more than twenty volcanoes around a small caldera, the heart of Daisetsuzan National Park. No eruption has been recorded in written history here, and geologists date the most recent steam explosion to the last few centuries. Hikers riding the Asahidake ropeway pass close to the fumaroles at Sugatami pond. Snow covers the mountain for much of the year, and low cloud often hides the peak, so a clear frame is a small treat.

JMA uses a five-level Volcanic Alert Level for Taisetsuzan, where higher levels close first the crater area, then the mountain, then nearby communities. Please check JMA's current level rather than relying on the picture.
