What you are looking at
This camera looks at Tokachidake from the Shirogane model farm in Biei, on the north-northwest side of the mountain about nine kilometers from the summit and some seven hundred meters above sea level. The frame faces the steaming upper slopes where the active craters lie, including the vents that have been the focus of eruptions over the last century.
Tokachidake is one of Hokkaido's most active volcanoes. In 1926 an eruption melted snow on the summit and sent a fast mudflow down the valleys to Kamifurano and Biei, killing many people; eruptions followed in 1962 and again in 1988 and 1989. Plumes from the fumaroles are often visible in cold, still air, while winter brings deep snow and summer brings the fields and the famous Blue Pond area of Shirogane to the mountain's foot.
JMA watches the volcano around the clock with seismometers, tiltmeters and cameras, and publishes a Volcanic Alert Level from 1 to 5; levels 2 and 3 restrict access near the crater or to the mountain itself. Look up JMA's current level and any trail closures before you go.
