Espoo is Finland's second most populous city, with about 326,000 residents, spread along the coast directly west of Helsinki in the Uusimaa region. It is less a single town than a group of centers joined by highways and the western metro line, which opened in 2017: Tapiola, the 1950s garden city; Otaniemi, campus of Aalto University; Leppävaara, Matinkylä, Espoonlahti and the old church village of Espoon keskus, where Espoo Cathedral dates back to the late Middle Ages. In the north, the lake highlands of Nuuksio National Park start within the city limits, while the small town of Kauniainen sits entirely inside Espoo as an enclave.

In Espoo they stand beside the region's main traffic arteries, among them Ring I, Ring III, the coastal Länsiväylä and national road 1 toward Turku, which was Finland's first motorway when it opened in 1962. The purpose is practical: a quick look at lane surfaces, spray and visibility during rush hour or a snowstorm. You get still frames that renew every few minutes, often with several viewing directions from the same pole.

Espoo shares Helsinki's clock, two hours ahead of UTC in the cold season and three hours ahead under summer time. In late December the city sees under six hours of daylight, with the sun setting around a quarter past three, but in June it rises before four and stays up until nearly eleven. Morning traffic peaks between seven and nine, which is when the motorway views are busiest. Slush and black ice are common from November to March, and the first heavy snowfall of the season often brings long queues on the rings.

Nearby, central Helsinki is about twenty minutes east by metro or car, and the archipelago islands off Espoo's shore, such as Pentala and Iso Vasikkasaari, are popular for summer day trips by boat.
