Live cameras in Tampere, Finland

Tampere sits on a narrow isthmus between two big lakes, Näsijärvi to the north and Pyhäjärvi to the south, and the Tammerkoski rapids rush through the city center from one to the other. With about 263,000 residents, it is the third-largest city in Finland and the capital of the Pirkanmaa region. Founded in 1779, it grew into the country's leading industrial city in the nineteenth century, powered by the rapids and by textile mills such as Finlayson, which is why people called it the Manchester of the North. The old red-brick factories now hold museums, restaurants and offices. Tampere also calls itself the sauna capital of the world, with public saunas on the lakeshores, and the Pyynikki ridge, one of the highest eskers of its kind, rises above the city with an observation tower and forest trails.

The cameras

Fintraffic, Finland's traffic agency, provides the Tampere views through the Digitraffic service. They are road-weather cameras at roadside weather stations, often with several views each, and they post still images several times an hour. In the Tampere area they look along major roads such as Highway 3 toward Helsinki and Vaasa, Highway 9 toward Turku and Jyväskylä, and Highway 12, which runs across the region toward Lahti. The images show surface conditions and visibility, which can change quickly in winter.

Like all of mainland Finland, Tampere sits on Eastern European Time and shifts to summer time each spring. In late December the day lasts only around five and a half hours, and in late June it stretches to about nineteen and a half, with bright nights. Snow usually arrives by December and can stay into April, and the lakes freeze in most winters, inviting skaters and skiers. Commuter traffic peaks in the early morning and late afternoon on weekdays.
