Lahti is a lakeside city of about 122,000 people in southern Finland, roughly a hundred kilometers northeast of Helsinki at the southern tip of Lake Vesijärvi. The city stands on the Salpausselkä ridge, a long glacial moraine that crosses southern Finland from west to east, and that ridge gives Lahti its famous ski hills. The city has hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships seven times, most recently in 2017, and the Lahti Ski Games return to the ski stadium almost every winter, with ski jumps that tower over the city. Down by the harbor, the wooden Sibelius Hall is home to the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. In 2021 Lahti was named European Green Capital for its work on clean water, transport and climate.
About the cameras
The cameras whose main place is Lahti come from Fintraffic, the national traffic agency, through the Digitraffic open data service. They are road-weather cameras with views from roadside weather stations, updated several times an hour. Two major highways meet here: Highway 4, the motorway between Helsinki and Jyväskylä, and Highway 12, which crosses the region between Tampere and Kouvola. The images show how the roads look in snow, slush, rain or fog, and help drivers decide when to leave.
- Ski season: usually from December into March, with the Ski Games in late winter
- Shortest days: about five and a half hours of daylight in late December
- Summer: long evenings on the lake, light until about eleven
Lahti's clocks follow Finnish time, an hour ahead of Central Europe. Inland from the coast, winters here are colder and snowier than in Helsinki, and the morning commute on the motorway toward the capital can be slow after a heavy snowfall. On calm, clear winter nights, faint northern lights may sometimes be seen away from city lights.
Nearby, the Päijänne National Park protects islands and ridges in Finland's second-largest lake to the north, and the riverside town of Heinola lies a short drive north up Highway 4.
