Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, set where the Ounasjoki joins the Kemijoki river, between the hills of Ounasvaara and Korkalovaara. The city has about 66,000 residents and covers a vast area of forest, fells and river valleys. Almost the whole town was burned during the Lapland War in 1944, and the rebuilding plan by Alvar Aalto laid out the main streets in a shape often compared to reindeer antlers. Today Rovaniemi is best known as the official hometown of Santa Claus. Santa Claus Village stands on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of the center, and the Arktikum museum, rising from the Ounasjoki bank, explains Arctic nature and life in the north. At night the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge across the Kemijoki is lit by its glowing towers.
Road cameras near the Arctic Circle
These cameras are part of Fintraffic's roadside weather network, and their pictures are shared openly through Digitraffic. In and around Rovaniemi they look along the main roads that converge on the city, including national road 4 (E75), which runs north from Kemi past the Arctic Circle toward Sodankylä and Inari. Expect snow-packed roads, ploughed banks and long blue twilight in winter, with fresh still images every few minutes rather than video.
Rovaniemi keeps Finnish time, UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer. Daylight here swings to extremes. The city has midnight sun from about early June to early July, roughly a month when the sun does not set at all. Strictly speaking it has no true polar night, but around the winter solstice the sun peeks above the horizon for only about two hours, from about eleven in the morning to a little after one in the afternoon, and the rest of the day is twilight or darkness. That darkness, together with clear frosty skies, makes Rovaniemi a popular place to watch the northern lights from late August to early April. Christmas season, from late November through New Year, is the busiest time for visitors.
Nearby, Ranua Wildlife Park, with polar bears and other Arctic animals, is about 80 km south, and the ski slopes of Ounasvaara sit just across the river from downtown.
