Live cameras in Ylivieska, Finland

Ylivieska is a small town in Northern Ostrobothnia, about 130 km south of Oulu, with about 15,000 residents. The Kalajoki River flows through the town center from southeast to northwest, and the town serves as the shopping and service hub for the surrounding Kalajoki valley. Much of its growth came after the Ostrobothnia railway arrived in 1886, and today trains between Helsinki, Oulu and Rovaniemi still stop here. Ylivieska is also known around Finland as a car-dealing town, with an unusually large number of dealerships for its size.

The town's 18th-century wooden church burned down on Holy Saturday, March 26, 2016. A new Holy Trinity Church, designed by K2S Architects with a striking multi-gabled roof, was consecrated in spring 2021, and a cross made from charred timber of the old church stands on the site as a reminder.

Several main roads cross the Ylivieska area, among them national road 27, which links the coast at Kalajoki with Iisalmi, and road 86 from Liminka in the north. Stations along these routes point their cameras along the lanes to show snow, ice, water spray and visibility. Images are still pictures that update every few minutes. The flat, open fields of Ostrobothnia make blowing snow and whiteout conditions a frequent winter sight.

Ylivieska is on Finnish time, UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer. At 64 degrees north, summer nights are short and bright: around midsummer the sun sets just before midnight and rises again before three. In late December, by contrast, daylight lasts only about four hours, from shortly after ten to about half past two, so camera views are dark through most of the afternoon and evening.

Nearby, the sand dunes and beaches of Kalajoki on the Gulf of Bothnia are about 50 km west, and the small town of Nivala lies just to the southeast.
