Live cameras in Kuopio, Finland

Kuopio is the regional capital of North Savo, in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, and it is almost completely surrounded by the many arms of Lake Kallavesi. About 126,000 people live in the municipality, which also takes in large rural areas and countless islands. The city is a major study center, home to the University of Eastern Finland and Savonia University of Applied Sciences. Its busy market square, ringed by old wooden and stone buildings, is the place to try kalakukko, a Savonian fish and pork pie baked in a rye crust. The forested Puijo hill rises north of the center, topped by an observation tower and a ski jumping hill that has hosted World Cup competitions. In June the Kuopio Dance Festival fills the city's stages.

About the cameras

Kuopio's own cameras come from Fintraffic, the Finnish traffic agency, via the Digitraffic open data service. Every one is linked to a roadside weather station, many aim in more than one direction, and their stills are renewed several times an hour. Here they follow the main roads across the lake country, including Highway 5, which links Kuopio south toward Mikkeli and Helsinki and north toward Iisalmi, and Highway 9 toward Jyväskylä. The long bridges and causeways over the lakes are exposed to wind and drifting snow, so the views can be revealing in winter.

Kuopio runs on Finnish time, UTC plus two in winter and plus three from late March to late October. Winters are long and cold, with reliable snow cover, and in late December the sun is above the horizon for under five hours. The frozen lake hosts the Finland Ice Marathon, a long-distance skating race, when conditions allow. In summer, daylight lasts around twenty hours and lake cruises leave from the harbor. Northern lights appear from time to time on clear autumn and winter nights.

Nearby, Tahko ski resort in Nilsiä lies about an hour to the north, and the scenic Lakeland routes around Kallavesi lead on toward Varkaus and Savonlinna.
