Live cameras in Oulu, Finland

Oulu is the largest city in northern Finland, built where the Oulujoki river flows into the Gulf of Bothnia, about six hundred kilometers north of Helsinki. Around 217,000 people live in the city, which makes it one of the few places this far north with more than a hundred thousand residents. King Charles IX of Sweden founded the town in 1605, and it grew rich on tar and salmon. After a great fire in 1822, the architect Carl Ludvig Engel helped shape the rebuilt center. Today the city is known for technology and for its university, and in 2026 it shares the title of European Capital of Culture with Trenčín in Slovakia. The seaside at Nallikari, with its long sandy beach, and the market square by the harbor are favorite spots for locals.

What the cameras show

Oulu's views are supplied by Fintraffic, Finland's national traffic agency, through its open Digitraffic service. They are road-weather cameras, mounted at weather stations along main roads, and each station often has two or more views pointing in different directions. Images are still frames updated several times an hour. Around Oulu they watch national roads such as Highway 4 along the coast, Highway 20 toward Kuusamo and Highway 22 toward Kajaani, showing snow, slush, ice and visibility.

Local time in Oulu is Eastern European Time, UTC plus two, with summer time from late March to late October. The seasons here are extreme. In the week of the winter solstice the sun is up for only about three and a half hours, so many winter images are taken in twilight or under road lights. Around midsummer it is the opposite: the sun sets for only a couple of hours and the night sky never fully darkens. Snow usually covers the ground from late autumn into April. On clear, dark nights from late August to early April, the northern lights are seen fairly often this far north.

Nearby, the island of Hailuoto lies just off the coast, reached by a car ferry across the bay, and in hard winters people walk and ski on the frozen sea from the Oulu shore.
