Tai Shui Hang is a neighborhood in the Ma On Shan new town, part of Sha Tin District in the New Territories of Hong Kong. It is not a separate town but a section of the high-rise district that grew along the eastern shore of Tolo Harbour from the 1980s onward, built around an older village whose traditional houses still stand among the towers. Housing estates such as Chevalier Garden, Kam Tai Court and Mountain Shore cluster near the waterfront, and Tai Shui Hang station on the MTR's Tuen Ma line connects the area with Sha Tin and the rest of the city.
Behind the neighborhood, the land rises steeply toward Ma On Shan, the saddle-shaped peak that gives the new town its name, and the trails of Ma On Shan Country Park. In the other direction, the Ma On Shan Promenade follows the harbor shore, a pleasant place for an evening walk or bike ride with views across the water to the hills of Tai Po.
Ma On Shan Road views
The government's Transport Department supplies this page's pictures, posting a fresh still from each roadside camera about every two minutes. Here they cover the roads of the Ma On Shan area, chiefly Ma On Shan Road, the main route linking the new town with central Sha Tin and the tunnels to Kowloon. Morning and evening peaks, and weekend traffic heading out toward Sai Kung's beaches and country parks, can be seen on these views.
Time here stays fixed at UTC plus eight through every season, the same as Shenzhen across the border. In June the sun sets a little after seven, and in December around a quarter to six. Summers are hot and humid with heavy rain and the chance of typhoons, while autumn and early winter usually bring clear, dry days. Weather warnings, such as a typhoon signal or a black rainstorm signal, quickly change traffic patterns.
The busy Sha Tin town center, with its racecourse and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, is a few stops away by train, and Wu Kai Sha, the end of the line, lies at the north end of Ma On Shan.
