Live cameras in Tung Chung, Hong Kong

Tung Chung is a new town on the northwestern coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong's Islands District, with about 116,000 residents. Until the 1990s it was a quiet fishing and farming village beside Tung Chung Bay; it was then built up as part of the Airport Core Programme to house people working at the new Hong Kong International Airport on nearby Chek Lap Kok, which opened in 1998. Tall residential towers now line the waterfront, and the town keeps growing on reclaimed land in the Tung Chung New Town Extension. Reminders of the older days remain, including Tung Chung Fort, built in 1817, and village temples in the valley behind the town.

Airport and highway views

Hong Kong's Transport Department runs these roadside cameras and posts a new snapshot from each one at short, regular intervals. Around Tung Chung they watch the North Lantau Highway, the expressway that links the airport and Tung Chung with Tsing Ma Bridge and the urban areas, as well as the roads toward the airport island and the Hong Kong port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Each camera is linked to its nearest place, so views from the airport approaches and the highway along the north shore gather on this page.

Lantau runs on the same clock as the rest of the territory, UTC plus eight, and there is no summer time switch to keep track of. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, and typhoon season runs roughly from May to November, when the Observatory's tropical cyclone signals can slow or stop traffic and ferries. Autumn and winter bring clearer, drier air. The sun sets around a quarter past seven in June and just before six in December. Traffic peaks around airport shift changes and during holiday periods such as Lunar New Year and Golden Week, when crowds head for the airport.

The Ngong Ping 360 cable car leaves from Tung Chung for the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery in the hills, and Citygate Outlets by the MTR station is the town's main gathering place.
