A Coruña is a port city of about 250,000 people on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, built on a peninsula that juts into the bay known as the Golfo Ártabro. At the tip of the peninsula stands the Tower of Hercules, a Roman lighthouse that has guided ships for nearly two thousand years and is considered the oldest lighthouse in the world still in use; it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The city is also known as the City of Glass for the white-framed glazed balconies, the galerías, that line the waterfront along the Avenida da Mariña, built to catch light and keep out sea weather. A long seafront promenade loops around the peninsula past the beaches of Riazor and Orzán, the old town and the harbor.
What the cameras show
A Coruña's cameras belong to the DGT, which posts a fresh still from each one every few minutes. They watch the main state roads leading in and out of the city, including the AP-9 motorway south toward Santiago and Vigo, the A-6 motorway toward Lugo and Madrid, and the approaches to Avenida de Alfonso Molina, the main entrance to the city, where traffic gathers at rush hour. They help with spotting congestion, heavy rain or fog before setting out.
A Coruña uses Central European Time, so winter mornings stay dark until after half past eight, and in late June the sun does not set until about ten past ten in the evening. The climate is mild and oceanic, with frost and snow very rare but frequent rain and strong Atlantic winds in autumn and winter, when big waves crash against the promenade. The night of June 23, San Xoán, is the city's most famous celebration, with bonfires on the beaches and heavy traffic around the seafront.
Nearby, the Monte de San Pedro park offers wide views over the bay from the west side of the city, and the medieval town of Betanzos lies a short drive east.
