Viveiro is a small coastal town in the province of Lugo, on the north coast of Galicia where the Landro river opens into a sheltered ría facing the Cantabrian Sea. About 15,000 people live in the municipality, a number that roughly triples in summer when visitors fill the beaches at Covas and the nearby coves. It is the main town of the western Mariña, a stretch of coast known for cliffs, fishing harbors such as Celeiro and green hills dropping to the sea. The old town keeps three of its medieval gates, including the Porta de Carlos V, decorated with the emperor's coat of arms and now the town's emblem. Viveiro's Holy Week processions have been declared a festival of international tourist interest, and every summer the Resurrection Fest brings heavy metal and punk fans from across Europe.
