Live cameras in Burgos, Spain

Burgos is a historic city of about 178,000 people on the high plains of northern Castile, set at about 865 meters on the banks of the Arlanzón river. Founded in 884, it became known as the head of Castile and was for centuries the seat of the kingdom's power. Its Gothic cathedral, begun in 1221, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds the tomb of the medieval warrior Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, whose statue stands by the river. The city is a major stop on the Camino de Santiago, and pilgrims pass through the old town on their way west. Just outside the city, the Atapuerca hills have yielded some of the oldest human fossils in Europe, now shown at the Museum of Human Evolution beside the river. Burgos is also a city of good food and was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2015.

Burgos is a key junction of the national road network, and the views cover the A-1 motorway between Madrid and the Basque Country and France, the AP-1 toward Vitoria, the A-62 southwest toward Valladolid and Portugal, and the A-231 toward León. Heavy truck traffic is common on all of them, and the cameras give a quick look at weather and congestion on these long, exposed plateau roads.

Burgos follows Central European Time. It is often described as the coldest Spanish city with more than a hundred thousand inhabitants, with frequent frost, freezing fog and snow in winter, so the road images are most useful from December to March. Summers are warm but nights stay cool. Around the end of June, the San Pedro and San Pablo fiestas fill the city with concerts and events.

Nearby, the Cartuja de Miraflores monastery lies on a hill just east of the center, and the royal monastery of Las Huelgas, founded by King Alfonso VIII and Queen Eleanor in the twelfth century, is a short walk west of the old town.
