Live cameras in Alcobendas, Spain

Alcobendas is a municipality of the Community of Madrid, about fifteen kilometers north of the Puerta del Sol and tied into the capital's northern suburbs. Its streets run straight into those of San Sebastián de los Reyes, so the two towns read as one continuous urban area. Inside the municipal limits lies La Moraleja, one of the wealthiest residential districts in Spain, cut off from the older town center by the A-1 motorway. What began as a modest farming village recorded in 1208 grew quickly after 1960, and today it is a prosperous place full of corporate offices, international schools and the Valdelatas nature reserve on its western edge. The actress Penélope Cruz grew up here, and the FIBA Hall of Fame sits in a basketball museum in town.

What the cameras show

Two kinds of feeds meet on this page. Spain's Dirección General de Tráfico, the national traffic authority, supplies views from the big radial roads, and Alcobendas is crossed or skirted by several of them: the A-1 Autovía del Norte toward Burgos, the M-12 airport link, the M-50 orbital and the R-2 toll road toward Guadalajara. The City of Madrid adds its own street cameras, and because the map files each camera under the closest place, some views from the northern edge of Madrid end up here too. All of them send still frames that refresh every few minutes rather than moving video.

The best moments to look are the weekday rush hours, roughly 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning and again from about 6 to 8 in the evening, when the A-1 corridor fills with commuters heading for the business parks. Madrid keeps Central European Time, with daylight saving from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, so summer sunsets come late, after 9:40 in June. Winters are dry and cold at night; summers are hot.

Local fiestas honor the Virgen de la Paz around 24 January, with a procession from the church of San Pedro, and San Isidro is celebrated in May. Madrid-Barajas airport is only a few minutes southeast along the M-12.
