Live cameras in Getafe, Spain

Getafe is a city of about 193,000 people in the Community of Madrid, thirteen kilometers south of the capital's center on the flat plain of the Manzanares basin. It grew up along the old royal road from Madrid to Toledo, which still forms its main street, and its name evolved from the Arabic-derived Xatafi. In the twentieth century it became an industrial town: Airbus builds aircraft here, the Getafe Air Base is one of the oldest military airfields in Spain, and the Charles III University of Madrid has its main campus in the city. On the southern edge rises the Cerro de los Ángeles, a hill long described as the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula, crowned by a monument to the Sacred Heart.

What you can watch here

The cameras gathered on this page come from two public sources. The national traffic agency DGT covers the main highways around Getafe: the A-4 toward Andalusia, the A-42 toward Toledo, which slices through the middle of the city, and the M-45 and M-50 ring roads. The City of Madrid's own street cameras are included where Getafe is the nearest named place, so a few views from Madrid's southern districts may appear. Expect a fresh still image every few minutes, not continuous video.

The A-42 is busiest on weekday mornings heading north toward Madrid and in the evening coming home. Sunday evenings in summer bring heavy return traffic from Toledo and the south. The region runs on Central European Time, moving clocks forward at the end of March and back at the end of October; in December the sun sets before six, while in late June it lingers past 9:45 in the evening. Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C.

The city's biggest celebration honors its patron, the Virgen de los Ángeles. On Ascension Day her image is carried in a pilgrimage from the hilltop sanctuary down to the Cathedral of La Magdalena, and the fiestas fill the following weeks in May or early June. Parque Warner and the Madrid suburbs of Leganés and Fuenlabrada are close neighbors.
