Granada is a city of about 233,000 people in Andalusia, capital of the province of the same name, set at around 740 meters above sea level where the Darro and Genil rivers leave the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It was the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula: the Nasrid emirs ruled from here until the Catholic Monarchs took the city in 1492. Their palace complex, the Alhambra, with the Generalife gardens, is one of the most visited monuments in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter of whitewashed houses on the hill opposite. The Sierra Nevada ski station, which hosted the 1996 world alpine championships, is less than an hour's drive away.
What the cameras show
The DGT, the Spanish traffic directorate, supplies all of the cameras on this page. They watch the major roads around Granada: the A-44 running north to Jaén and south to the coast at Motril, the A-92 across Andalusia toward Seville and Almería, and the GR-30 ring road around the city. Views near the junctions of these routes are grouped here as Granada is their nearest named place. Every image is a still updated on a cycle of a few minutes.
Granada sits high and inland, so winter mornings can be close to freezing and snow sometimes reaches the mountain roads, while summer afternoons are hot and dry. The A-44 down to the Costa Tropical is busy on summer weekends. Clocks follow Central European Time, an hour ahead of UTC through the winter and two hours ahead from late March to late October. Spring evenings are the most pleasant, and in June it stays light until nearly ten.
Holy Week is a major event, with processions winding up the steep streets of the Albaicín. Corpus Christi brings a week-long fair, and the International Festival of Music and Dance fills the Alhambra's courtyards in early summer. The view from the Mirador de San Nicolás across to the Alhambra at sunset is the city's best-loved sight.
