Mallorca is the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, in the western Mediterranean, with an area of about 3,640 square kilometers and around 940,000 residents. Palma, its capital, is also the capital of the Balearic Islands region and holds nearly half the island's people. Along the northwest coast, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains climb to 1,445 meters at Puig Major; the range was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape in 2011 for its terraces, stone paths and villages such as Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller. The interior plain, Es Pla, is a patchwork of almond groves, farms and market towns, and the coast is ringed with bays and beaches that make the island one of Europe's busiest holiday destinations.
Where the camera views come from
On this map the island's cameras arrive through the DGT, Spain's national traffic authority, which publishes still images that refresh every few minutes. The roads themselves are run by the Consell de Mallorca, the island council, which builds and maintains the Ma-numbered network and also shows camera views on its own traffic portal; the DGT remains the authority for traffic rules and enforcement. The busiest corridors include the Ma-20 ring road around Palma, the Ma-19 motorway past the airport toward Llucmajor, the Ma-13 inland toward Inca and the north, and the Ma-1 west toward Andratx. These public views are separate from the network of vehicle-monitoring cameras and noise meters that the Consell began installing in 2026.
The Balearics share mainland Spain's clock, an hour ahead of UTC in winter and two hours ahead in summer. Midsummer evenings on the island stay bright until about nine thirty; midwinter light is gone soon after five thirty. Summers are hot and dry, with the heaviest traffic in July and August, when airport arrivals and rental cars fill the roads. Autumn brings the strongest storms. Palma's patron saint, Sant Sebastià, is celebrated around January 20, just after the bonfires of Sant Antoni.
Ferries link Palma and Alcúdia with the mainland and with Menorca and Ibiza, the neighboring islands.
