Halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, about 300 kilometers from each, Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon and Spain’s fourth-largest city, with about 700,000 inhabitants. It stands on the Ebro, Spain’s great northeastern river, where the Huerva and Gállego join nearby. Two monuments define it: the vast Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar on the riverbank and the Aljafería, an eleventh-century Islamic palace that now houses the Aragonese parliament.
