Huesca is the capital of the province of the same name in Aragon, northeastern Spain, and one of the smallest provincial capitals in the country, with about 54,000 inhabitants. It stands on the plain of the Hoya de Huesca, with the first ranges of the Pyrenees rising to the north. The city is very old: as Osca it was a Roman colony and the base of the rebel general Quintus Sertorius, and from 1096 to 1118 it served as capital of the Kingdom of Aragon. The Gothic cathedral crowns the hill of the old town, and nearby the former royal palace holds the room linked to the medieval legend of the Bell of Huesca. The Romanesque cloister of San Pedro el Viejo is one of the city's treasures.
What the cameras show
The cameras on this page are operated by the DGT, Spain's traffic directorate. The A-23 motorway runs past the city, linking it south to Zaragoza and north toward the Pyrenees and the Somport tunnel to France, and the A-22 heads east toward Lleida. Cameras along these routes and the nearby national roads are grouped here because Huesca is their closest named place. Each image is a still that refreshes every few minutes.
Winter is when these views are most useful: icy mornings are common, and the roads north toward the Pyrenean valleys and ski resorts can be affected by snow. Summers are hot and dry. Huesca, on Central European Time, sees long summer evenings, with the sun setting at about 9:35 p.m. near the June solstice, while clocks fall back an hour on the last Sunday in October.
The Fiestas de San Lorenzo, held each year from 9 to 15 August, are the city's great celebration, with dancers dressed in white and green and plenty of basil sprigs in honor of the saint. Since 1973 Huesca has also hosted an international short film festival in early summer. The castle of Loarre, one of the best preserved Romanesque fortresses in Europe, and the rock towers of the Mallos de Riglos are both under an hour's drive.
