Keelung is a port city on Taiwan’s northeastern tip, tucked between steep green hills and a deep natural harbor that opens to the East China Sea. Mountains hem it in on the east, west and south, so the city of about 360,000 people climbs up the slopes around the water. It is one of Taiwan’s main seaports, a regular stop for cruise ships, and the starting point of the island’s two great north–south freeways.

That last fact explains why the Keelung area has such a large group of cameras on LiveLocation, more than 230 drawn from Taiwan’s national road CCTV feeds run by the Freeway Bureau and Highway Bureau. National Freeway 1 begins near the harbor and heads toward Taipei, about half an hour away. National Freeway 3 starts at the Jijin interchange on the Keelung coast, and Provincial Highway 2 passes through on its way along the north shore. Expect views of ramps, tunnels, hillside curves and harbor-side roads. The images reload at intervals rather than streaming continuously.

Weather worth watching

Locals call Keelung “the Rainy Port,” and the name fits. Average yearly rainfall is well over 3,500 millimeters, much of it delivered from autumn into spring by the northeast monsoon, which brings long spells of drizzle and low cloud. Summer is hotter and brighter but open to typhoons, usually between June and October. Time here is UTC+8. Daylight lasts a little over 13 hours at midsummer and falls to around 10.5 in late December, so winter evenings turn dark early, and wet road surfaces shine under the lights.

Nearby sights include Heping Island Park on the rocky coast, Zhongzheng Park above the harbor, and the busy Miaokou Night Market in the center. In the seventh lunar month, usually in August, the long-running Keelung Ghost Festival draws crowds to the city. The wider radius here reaches into New Taipei City’s Ruifang and Xizhi districts.
