Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, fills most of the Taipei Basin in the north of the island, an old lakebed where the Keelung and Xindian rivers join to form the Tamsui River. About 2.5 million people live within the city limits, and several million more in the towns that ring it. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and the typhoon season from about June to October can turn a clear view into sheets of rain within hours. Winters are short, mild and often foggy or gray, which softens the views over the basin.
