Live cameras in Nantou, Taiwan

Nantou City is the seat of Nantou County, the only county in Taiwan without a coastline. It lies in the center of the island between the Bagua Mountains and the Maoluo River, covering about 71 square kilometers, and has just under 100,000 residents. Its moment in national history came in 1957, when the Taiwan Provincial Government moved to Zhongxing New Village on the north side of town, a planned garden community of offices and staff housing that still feels quiet and green today. The city also suffered badly in the 1999 Jiji earthquake, which ruptured along the nearby Chelungpu Fault. Other sights include the Lantian Academy, a Qing-era school, and the Houtanjing recreation area in the hills, with its suspension bridge and views over the plain.

National Freeway 3 serves the city with the Nantou interchange at about kilometer 228, and Provincial Highway 3, here called Nangang Road, is the main road in and out, running north toward Caotun and Taichung and south toward Mingjian and Zhushan. Nantou uses Taiwan time, UTC plus eight, and does not change clocks for summer. Inland and sheltered by hills, it has hot summers, with temperatures that have reached over 37 degrees Celsius, about 1,750 millimeters of rain a year, and mild, sunny winters. Typhoon season runs roughly from July to October. Days are longest in June, with sunset near a quarter to seven, and shortest in December, with sunset around a quarter past five. Weekday mornings bring county office traffic, and holiday weekends bring travelers heading for Sun Moon Lake and the mountains.

Caotun, Taiwan's most populous township, borders the city to the north, and the tea hills of Mingjian and Lugu rise to the south.
