Puli is a township in Nantou County that sits almost exactly in the middle of Taiwan. It fills a green basin about 445 meters above sea level, ringed by forested ridges, and is home to about 77,000 people. A marker for the island’s geographic center stands here, and the town is also known for its winery, run by the state tobacco and liquor company, the large Chung Tai Chan Monastery, and nearby Taomi Village, which rebuilt itself around eco-tourism after the 1999 earthquake.
The roughly 100 cameras attached to Puli come from Taiwan’s national road agencies and are shared through the transport ministry’s open data platform. Puli is the eastern end of National Freeway 6, the Shuishalian route that tunnels and bridges its way from Wufeng in Taichung, so several views follow the freeway as it drops into the basin. Others watch Provincial Highway 14, which runs through town and briefly shares its path with Provincial Highway 21 before that road turns south toward Sun Moon Lake. East of Puli, Highway 14 narrows as it climbs into Ren’ai Township, and its spur 14A leads up to Cingjing Farm and the high pass at Wuling below Hehuanshan. Images are snapshots that update periodically rather than continuous video.
Puli keeps Taiwan’s UTC+8 time all year. The basin is wetter than the coast, with the heaviest rain from June through August, when afternoon storms and typhoon bands can close mountain sections. Morning mist often lingers over the fields in the cooler months, so early views can look soft before the sun burns it off. In winter, cold fronts sometimes bring frost or even snow to the Hehuanshan heights, and weekend traffic toward the mountains picks up sharply when that happens.
The wider radius reaches Sun Moon Lake to the south and the mountain roads of Ren’ai to the east. Weekend afternoons are a good time to see visitors heading home along Freeway 6.
