Live cameras in Yujing, Taiwan

Yujing is a quiet rural district in the eastern hills of Tainan, home to about 12,600 people. It sits in a basin where several valleys meet, and for decades its name has been almost a synonym for mangoes: government promotion in the 1960s turned the hillsides into orchards, and the Mango Industry Culture Information Hall now tells that story. The district has a darker history too. In 1915 it was the scene of the Tapani Incident, one of the largest armed uprisings by Han Taiwanese and Indigenous people against Japanese rule, remembered today at a memorial park. The old name Tapani probably came from a Taivoan community. The Yujing Beiji Temple, devoted to Xuantian Shangdi, is the town's spiritual center.

Why so many cameras for a small town

Yujing is a highway junction. Three provincial routes meet here: Provincial Highway 3, the inland road that runs the length of western Taiwan; Provincial Highway 20, the Southern Cross-Island Highway, which climbs from Tainan through Yujing and Jiaxian to the Yakou pass at 2,722 meters before descending to Taitung; and Provincial Highway 84, the expressway from Beimen on the coast. The cross-island road was closed for years after Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and fully reopened in 2022. The highway authorities watch these routes closely, and because our map gives each camera to its nearest place, many mountain and valley cameras end up on Yujing's page. Yujing is on UTC plus eight with no daylight saving time. Summer is hot and stormy, with typhoon season from about July to October, which is exactly when mountain road conditions matter most. The Yujing Mango Festival is held each July, when fruit stands line the main roads and visitors drive in from Tainan and Kaohsiung. Expect daylight until about a quarter to seven in June and until about a quarter past five in December.
