What you are looking at
This GSCK camera sits at about 360 m (1,180 feet) on Great Sitkin Island, roughly 8 km (5 miles) south-southwest of the volcano's summit, and looks north-northeast. On clear days, the frame shows snowy, jagged ridges low across the bottom of the picture, with the volcano's upper slopes rising beyond; much of the time, cloud fills the sky above them.
Great Sitkin, in the central Aleutians near Adak, began a slow lava eruption in 2021. Lava has oozed into its summit crater for years, building a thick flow that has spread across the crater floor, with occasional small explosions. Because the activity can change, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Great Sitkin page for the current alert level and updates.
The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Aleutian weather means fog, rain and wind for much of the year; clear frames are most likely on cold winter days or rare calm summer evenings. Snow covers the ridges most of the year. Tip: when this view is clouded in, the WHIT camera on Adak sometimes shows Great Sitkin from a distance.
