What you are looking at
This view from the WHIT station on Adak Island, at about 190 m (620 feet), looks west across water toward Kanaga Volcano, about 32 km (20 miles) away. On clear days, Kanaga stands as a sharp, symmetrical cone on its island, with a tall instrument mast and a solar-powered equipment box in the foreground of the frame.
Kanaga, in the Andreanof Islands, is a stratovolcano that has erupted several times in historical times, most recently with a short explosion in 2012. Adak, a former naval base and now a small community, is the closest town. The same WHIT station also has a camera pointing east toward Great Sitkin. For Kanaga's current status, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Kanaga page.
A fresh frame appears here about every ten minutes. Sunsets behind the cone can be dramatic; mornings bring even light. Fog and low clouds often hide the island entirely. Tip: when the sky is clear, compare both WHIT views to see two volcanoes from one spot.
