What you are looking at
The KIMD camera sits on the southern part of Kanaga Island in the Andreanof Islands, about 19 km (12 miles) south-southwest of Kanaga Volcano. It looks north-northeast across flat tundra and small ponds toward the volcano, which appears as a small, sharp cone on the horizon beneath a wide Aleutian sky, often streaked with clouds.
Kanaga is a stratovolcano at the north end of its island, with small eruptions in historical times, including in the 1990s and a short explosion in 2012. It lies near Adak, the nearest community, and under air routes across the North Pacific. AVO watches it with seismic stations and cameras like this one. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Kanaga page lists the current alert level.
Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. The best views come on calm, clear days, when the cone stands out sharply; clouds, mist and rain are common. In winter the tundra turns white and days are short. Tip: if the cone is hidden here, try the WHIT camera on Adak, which sees Kanaga from the east.
