What you are looking at
The WHIT camera is on Adak Island, at about 190 m (620 feet), and this view looks east-northeast across Adak's tundra toward Great Sitkin, about 47 km (29 miles) away. On clear days, the volcano is a low, snowy shape on the horizon above water and distant land, with an instrument mast standing on the right side of the frame.
Great Sitkin has been erupting lava slowly in its summit crater since 2021, occasionally with small explosions. Adak, the nearest community, is a former naval base with a small population and an airport, and ash from Great Sitkin could reach it. The same WHIT station also has a camera pointed at Kanaga Volcano to the west. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Great Sitkin page for current information.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. At this distance, the volcano is often hidden by cloud or haze; clear, cold days give the best views. Sunset and sunrise light can glow on the snow. Tip: if a plume appears here, compare with the closer GSCK camera on Great Sitkin Island for detail.
