What you are looking at
V2cam is a U.S. Geological Survey livestream camera on the eastern rim of Kīlauea's summit caldera, looking across Halemaʻumaʻu crater from the east. It is run by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which watches the volcano around the clock from its place in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. The camera is a pan-tilt-zoom model, so its view can change with the activity.
Since December 2024 the summit eruption has come in episodes, with lava fountains that can rise hundreds of feet, separated by quiet pauses that can last days. From this side you may see fountains and flows framed against the far crater walls, gas plumes drifting with the trade winds, and a strong glow after dark. On quiet days the view may show a dark crater floor, wisps of steam and passing showers.
The stream plays as live video on YouTube. If the image looks soft or blurry, try refreshing the page, as the USGS recommends. A practical tip: open V1cam and V3cam too, because the three angles together show the shape of a fountain far better than any single view, and check the observatory's latest update for the current status.
