Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on Hawaii Island, a broad shield on the southeastern slope of Mauna Loa inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its summit caldera holds Halemaumau crater, home of the fire goddess Pele in Hawaiian tradition, and two rift zones run east and southwest from it. The 35-year Puu Oo eruption on the East Rift Zone ended in 2018, when lava poured into lower Puna and the summit collapsed. Since December 23, 2024, Halemaumau has hosted an episodic eruption, with fountaining episodes that have sent lava hundreds of feet into the air and then paused for days or weeks.
The cameras on this page are run by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), with images refreshing about every five minutes. Summit views include the west, east and south rims of Halemaumau (V1, V2 and V3), the down-dropped block (B1), a wide panorama from the caldera rim (KW), a thermal camera (F1) that sees heat through fumes and darkness, and views from the old HVO tower and Mauna Loa Road. Others watch the East Rift Zone, from Mauna Ulu to the flanks of Puu Oo and the Holei Pali. USGS also streams V1, V2 and V3 live on YouTube. HVO uses all of them to track fountains, vent glow, gas plumes and new cracks. As of early October 2026, the Volcano Alert Level was Watch and the Aviation Color Code Orange: episode 54 ended on August 25, a shallow intrusion followed on September 30 to October 1, and the vents showed spattering and glow while scientists waited for a possible episode 55.
When to look
Hawaii keeps Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (UTC-10) all year, with no daylight saving. Glow shows best after dark and before dawn, while the thermal camera works day and night. Trade-wind showers and vog can blur the view, so if one camera is socked in, try another angle.
Next door on our map, Mauna Loa has its own summit cameras, and its 2022 eruption is worth reading about too.
