What you are looking at

This camera, called K2cam, watches Kaluapele, Kīlauea's summit caldera, from the observation tower at Uēkahuna, the bluff on the northwest caldera rim where the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory once had its building. It looks southeast over the treetops and caldera floor toward Halemaʻumaʻu, so the vent's plume rises from the distant crater beyond a few ʻōhiʻa trees in the foreground. It is a pan-tilt-zoom camera, and HVO may zoom in on the vent when there is activity.

The old observatory building at Uēkahuna was damaged by the earthquakes of the 2018 summit collapse and is no longer in use. Kīlauea's summit has erupted many times since then, including an episodic fountaining eruption that began in December 2024. For the current situation, read the USGS HVO update.

The snapshot updates about every five minutes. On active days a tall white plume, and at night an orange glow, mark the vent; on quiet days you may see only steam and vog. Morning trade-wind showers can blur the lens. Tip: this view is closest to what visitors see from the public overlooks on the west side of the caldera.

This view is worth a look at night too.
